Notes: Boots, 8+ years, showed up at a house a few weeks ago and just went with the flow. He is now available at the shelter for adoption or transfer. He is reportedly good with other dogs and children. Just a quiet old soul who needs a bed to rest his tired bones. This sweet, mature gentleman would love a porch or couch, or both, to occupy. Boots showed up at a resident's house a few weeks ago and they took care of him until the shelter had room. He is good with kids and dogs and enjoys just being with humans. During our time together, Boots enjoyed a long sniffaree and some yummy treats - he really likes treats! This handsome boy was happy to meander and explore, and he frequently stopped to check in and get some love and pets. He would be such a great companion.

ONE BY ONE

One by one, they pass by my cage
Too old, too worn, too broken, they say
Way past his time, he can’t run and play
They shake their heads and go on their way
A little old man, arthritic and sore
It seems that I am wanted no more
I once had a home, I once had a bed
A place that was warm, and where I was fed
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn’t belong
I got in their way, my attitude wrong
Now I sit in this kennel, where day after day
The younger ones are chosen and taken away
When I had come to the end of my rope
You saw my face and again I knew hope
You saw past the grey, the legs wobbly with age
And felt I deserved life beyond this cage
You took me home, gave me food and a bed
You gently stroked my poor tired head
We snuggle and play, you talk to me low
You love me so dearly, and make sure I know
Although I have lived most of my life with another
You outshine them with a love so much stronger
I promise to return all the love I can give
To you my dear friend, as long as I live
I may be with you for a week, or for years
We will share many smiles, and a few tears
When the time comes, that God deems I must leave
I know you will cry and your heart it will grieve
When I arrive at the Bridge all brand new
My thoughts and my heart will still be with you
And I will brag to all who will hear
Of the person who made my last days so dear.

Our Adoption fee is $10 which includes a microchip and a discount Spay/Neuter/Rabies certificate to Countryside Veterinary Center in Amela (this includes the exam, the surgery and the Rabies vaccine) thanks to a local Non-Profit, APAW (Amelia Patrons for Animal Welfare).

State law requires that anyone adopting a shelter animal must have it spayed/neutered within 30 days of leaving the shelter. Virginia law requires that a sterilization agreement be signed. This agreement states that you will have the adopted animal sterilized within 30 days or by 6 months of age. If you do not live in a surrounding county, the dog or cat will have to be sterilized before it leaves our facility. All our animals come with a microchip and 30 day free trial of pet insurance. All puppies will have been started on vaccines and dewormed, and some of the older dogs have as well, depending on the situation.

For animals that have not been spayed or neutered: adoptions are open to residents of Amelia, Chesterfield, Powhatan, Cumberland, Prince Edward, Nottoway, Dinwiddie County. If an animal is already spayed or neutered then it is available to be adopted by anyone (even out of state residents). Phone to check that the dog is available and what paperwork is required from you.

Make sure that you are able to take your dog home on the day you adopt it. We will not keep a dog for you after its "available" day.
